Gimpshop was a fun little 'prank' that got bigger than I ever expected. I became discouraged after this whole ordeal and I let it slip away into obscurity. I hate that this guy is out there making my fun little project into an abomination. I originally created Gimpshop, but I'm not the jerk who owns that domain and added adware & spyware to the source. In a March 2014 discussion, Moschella states: I assumed the guy would just give it up as I sadly let the project stagnate, but that hasn't happened.

It has been five years, the software has stagnated (due in no small part to my becoming discouraged by this one profiteer who trumped me, stole much of my traffic and bumped my site down to the second result when you search for "Gimpshop"). I questioned his motives and he said he was just a fan and that the site was a "fan-site". I asked that the owner stop hot-linking my files (and draining my bandwidth), so he hosted them somewhere else. Soon, there were donate buttons, my name in the site's title and much more - making it look like my website. Not more than a few days after the OS X version was released and spread virally, someone who isn't me bought "", put up a site with hot-links to the files on my site and began advertising - LOTS of advertising.

Wouldn't GIMP be better and safer option then GIMPShop? Here's what I've found on wikipedia about GIMPShop: Its interface takes a little getting used to, but has served every need I have required of it thus far. If you want something a little more complex I would suggest GimpShop. Alternatively, there are charset templates available online (just search "rm2k3 charset template") that show where each character goes you can then just copy + paste your sprites.Ī point to note is that you can use the Resource Manager to set the transparent colour when you import (just click the colour you want to be transparent), so there is no actual requirement to save an image with transparency information if importing in this way.Originally posted by Kurashi: is the simplist while maintaining the tools needed for everything that I know of. Lots of programs can do this, but some are better than others.

A full charset file comprises 8 characters (some or all of which can be blank) in a grid of 4 columns and 2 rows, and is 288 x 256 pixels.Īll you need to do here is expand the borders of your exported character sprite to 288 x 256 and save in 256 colours (or less, as Anton mentions). Image size: a single character sprite set comprises facing directions and three-frame motion and is 72 x 128 pixels (3 x 4 grid of 24 x 32). GIMP is more than sufficient to fix both these issues (MS Paint also works, but as Anton mentions, it's not very good at the save-as-256-colours thing). (but more softwares can do that too, but I'm unaware of them)Īs Anton said, your problem is either colour depth or image size. bmpīut if you're like me and hate when 256 colors conversion gives data loss, then use a better image editing software.Ĭharacter Maker 1999 is my favourite, as it can save PNG directly inside the data folder and be immediately usable. bmp (256 colors) then proceed to import that. The safest (but a little degrading) way to import with paint is by saving the pic as. png don't seem to be valid, (maybe because it goes over the 256 colors requirements) Be of this exact size : 288 x 256 pixels PNG (of 256 colors maximum, could be lower) What is needed for a charset picture to be valid in the charset folder ?

If it happens that the charset pictures you place directly in the folder are invalid, then it can't work, or if you tried to import a charset with the ressource manager and failed : same thing, invalid file. What have you tried in the first place ? I don't know if I'll pinpoint your problem accurately, so here goes.
